SOLO — a McKinnon hacking adventure #1

Adventure #1 of #2

The true story. Between 2001 and 2002, a soft-spoken Scotsman named Gary McKinnon sat at a computer in a north London flat and — armed with nothing more than a dial-up modem, some simple scripts, and some pirate hacking utils — talked his way into roughly 97 United States military and NASA computers. He wasn't a state-sponsored spy or a criminal mastermind. He was a UFO believer on a one-man crusade, convinced the US government was hiding proof of free-energy technology and craft that weren't built on Earth. Working under the alias "Solo," he wandered through the Pentagon's networks and NASA's servers, hunting for the truth — and claims he found a spreadsheet of "non-terrestrial officers" and a photo of a cigar-shaped object he was too stunned to save before the connection dropped.

The US called it "the biggest military computer hack of all time" and spent a decade trying to extradite him. He was never convicted.

The game. SOLO puts you in that chair. Raise the line, listen for the carrier, and scan the addresses nobody bothered to firewall. Enumerate a host, slip through an open port, plant your foothold, and search machine after machine for the files you came for — all from an authentic period terminal, one typed command at a time. Every technique in the game is real tradecraft from the era; every consequence is drawn from the actual case. How far you go, and what you leave behind, is up to you.

Dramatised from the public record. The tools are real. The targets are not.
